City of Calgary
The City of Calgary is found nestled in Southwestern Alberta,
Canada. To the west, the world famous Rocky Mountains harbor Banff, the
small resort town famed for its beauty. The population of Calgary is approximately
950,000 at the 2004 census. We are known for our cleanliness, low crime
rate, and small town feel. Calgary is unique because it is so spread
out. Even by taking the fastest freeway, it may take close to 40 minutes
to travel north to south. Because we are so large, the city has numerous
green spaces as well as park and forest land. Not to be forgotten is the
Glenmore Reservoir, surrounded by biking trails and trees, it is one of the most
picturesque urban locations in the country.

Calgarians are some of the best sports fans in North America. As many
people know, the Calgary Flames of the NHL made it all the way to the Stanley
Cup Finals in June 2004. They came within one overtime goal in Game Six
Versus The Tampa Bay Lightning of winning it all. The Flames previously
advanced to the Cup Finals in 1986 and 1989 and won the Stanley Cup in
1989.
Here are some Photos taken during the road to the Stanley Cup in 2004.
After each individual game win, fans swarmed 17th Avenue and for several hours
it became the "Red Mile". Unlike other cities who celebrated sports victories, we had a very low amount of disorderly conduct and
no rioting.

We are also home to the Calgary Stampeders football Club, who play in the
Canadian Football League. The Stampeders were Grey Cup Champions in 1948,
1971, 1992, 1998, and 2001. Calgary has also hosted the Grey cup game
several times.
Our city is perhaps most well known for the Calgary Stampede. Every
July, for ten days, the city reverts to its western roots, with the modernity of
a large midway, casino, and product exhibits. While most activity is situated on
the Stampede Grounds, complimentary pancake breakfasts can be found throughout
town. During the 2005 Stampede, we broke the all time attendance record
with more than 1.2 million people coming to the grounds.
